There are a lot of people out there - an entire industry, in fact - dedicated to telling you that you have impostor syndrome, why it is a debilitating personal and professional liability, and why you need to do everything you can to beat, treat it, cure it. R.J. Jenkins, Director of Education at the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration, disagrees; he argues that, more often than not, impostor feelings are a natural byproduct of aspiration, and that if you’re actively experiencing impostor phenomenon, then you’re probably doing something right, not doing something wrong. R.J.'s reframe of “impostor syndrome” as a consequence of striving - not a symptom of unbelonging - is a love letter to his extraordinary students whose example has forever transformed his understanding of what it means to pursue - and to work in - higher education.
