Make Time for Social Media

Make Time for Social Media
A question I receive a lot is, how do you make time for all of this social media? It has to fit into your day and again, it's additive to your job search. So you don't want to spend hour after hour on social media and the internet during your job search.

You want to be out there interviewing. Looking for jobs. Meeting people. So here are my recommendations on fitting social media into your day.

Number one, focus on one or two networks. I strongly recommend LinkedIn for professionals. But if you are a photographer or you want to work in a visual industry, Instagram might be important for you. If you want to work in public relations, or government, or politics, Twitter might be more appropriate.

Talk to people in your industry and ask what networks might be valuable to your job search. But for the vast majority of professionals, LinkedIn will be on that list. But you do not have to be on every social network in order to get a job.

Next, there are tools that you can use to make social media a little bit easier to fit into your day. Hootsuite, TweetDeck, Buffer, and many others will take-- let's say-- your LinkedIn profile and create little columns for you to make it easier to follow people, and companies, and job opportunities. If you don't want to go to multiple sites, you can pull all of your social media into one of those social media management tools.

Another tip on making time is to schedule this into your day, maybe 15 or 30 minutes each day that your you're hunting. Rather than spending hours on social media, be focused in your efforts.

And finally, social media is endless. Accept that you won't see every single opportunity. You might not find every single connection. But every day that you're making progress will be helpful in your job search.

In this video, career and workplace expert Lindsey Pollak will discuss some simple tips and strategies for making time and focusing your social media efforts.
