I'm the daughter of a single mother. I'm first generation American. And just seeing my mother work so hard her whole life or my whole life to raise us and live the best life possible, I knew that being in the United States and just so long as I did the right things, I should be all right. And so it was important for me to fulfill that. It was kind of like paying back to her also.
So specifically I knew that by pursuing a higher education, I was going to meet people that were very different from me. Everyone until that point that I had in my network was mostly military people. And with me separating myself from that environment, I knew that I needed to grow my network with people that did not come from a similar background.
And so the big city, the college campus was able to give me that experience because I met people younger, older than me, professors, fellow students that were pursuing PhDs and masters that allowed me to really understand what else was out there for me. And my network has expanded tremendously.
